Spring is taking its time this year, or maybe we are just anticipating it more since we are all safe in our homes doing our part to combat the pandemic. Either way, before we know it, we’ll be enjoying the consistent sun, warm, weather, and that impossible to ignore urge to work in the yard. While many of us have been passing the time sorting through and organizing our living spaces, it’s time to consider what can go into storage. No one wants a home crowded with reminders of cold weather. That’s why we’ve put together some quick tips for storing winter items.
Though we have limited our hours and opted for contact-free signups for new leases, U-Lock-It Self Storage Belleville is here to help you with your spring storage. Please call or reserve a unit online.
Swap Your Sweaters for Shorts
Can you believe there was a time, maybe late September, that we were excited to break out our autumn and winter sweaters? Who even was that person? With those days long behind us, we are thrilled to put away the sweaters and boots and break out the swimsuits.
When storing clothes in your Ypsilanti self-storage unit, we suggest taking the time to do it right so your clothes look ready to wear come next fall. Plastic bins are best unless you have coats that shouldn’t be folded. In that case, we recommend a wardrobe box, which you can find among the moving supplies at your local hardware store.
Take the time to fold your clothes neatly, so they don’t lose their shape or get too wrinkled. If you are storing boots or other shoes, stuff them with paper (just like when you first took them out of the shoe box from the store). The article will make sure they retain their shape and don’t get crushed by other items in your unit.
Storing Snow Blowers
Just as you swap your sweaters for shorts, you’ll be swapping your snowblowers for lawnmowers. Before storing away your snowblowers, consider wiping down any corrosive salt that might remain on the sides (warm water and a cloth are all you need). Also, spray any exposed metal areas with rust preventative. For extra protection, invest in a snowblower cover that will mitigate any moisture build-up.
While it’s uncertain what the Fourth of July and other summer celebrations will look like this year, we can be optimistic and look forward to the winter holidays. Consider clear plastic baggies for smaller holiday decorations, so they’re easier to sort and identify when you need them again. Also, save yourself a headache by wrapping lights around cardboard to prevent tangling.
We hope these tips help with storing your winter items in one of our secure and convenient Belleville self-storage units. Please stay safe, folks!

Keep in mind that spring is often peak season for self-storage, so we suggest if you live in the Ypsilanti, Belleville, or surrounding areas to book your storage units at U-Lock-It sooner rather than later. This way, you’ll be able to take advantage of our low rates, easy gate access, and friendly staff through the spring and summer months.
Below are some suggestions on how self-storage can help with spring clutter!
1. College kids return home
Students will be returning home from the dorms, and with them comes a lot of stuff. From couches to winter clothes, every family needs a secure place to store these items until the fall semester. Our secure self-storage units offer the perfect option for college students and save your home from getting cluttered over the summer.
2. A big move
The housing market is usually in full gear come springtime, which is why people planning on moving in the coming months should book their storage units early. House closings can be unpredictable, and it’s best to have a secure storage unit to hold your stuff while you figure out your big move.
3. A new season
Winter requires a lot of stuff! Just think of all the space your snowblower, shovels, etc. take up in your garage. A Belleville self-storage unit is a great way to declutter and make room for your spring yard tools. Store your winter clothes in plastic bins, so you have room for your spring and summer clothes.
Here at U-Lock-It Self Storage Belleville, we won’t raise rates on you just because it’s the busy season. We are proud to be a family-owned and operated business that keeps our prices affordable. How Self-Storage Can Help You in 2020
As the decade ends, the team at U-Lock-It Self Storage Belleville would like to say thank you to all of our past, present, and future tenants. We appreciate the opportunity to serve the Belleville and Ypsilanti areas with secure, accessible, and affordable self-storage.
The start of a new year means a time to reflect and plan. For instance, many people make plans to improve and organize their life. From exercise to dedicating time to a hobby, the new year offers a fresh start. We want to suggest self-storage as an easy way to make 2020 a great one. Here are a couple of reasons why:
Declutter your life
Look around your home. Odds are you have items that you haven't used in months lying around, taking up much-needed space. Self-storage allows you to declutter your home and store seasonal things. As we endure a couple of cold months, there's no reason to take up drawer space with shorts and polos. Create more space in your home with self-storage.
Help with a move
Have a big move planned for 2020? Self-storage is an excellent way to make the process less stressful. Instead of moving everything you own all in at once, keep items in self-storage instead of throwing them out or giving them away. We understand that moving can be frantic, which is why self-storage gives you a secure and accessible option for the things about which you're not quite sure.
New Year, New Baby
If you have the exciting news that you'll be adding a new addition to the family in 2020, self-storage can help with that as well. Clearing out a spare bedroom to make space for a baby can result in a lot of furniture that isn't needed for some time. Self-storage offers a convenient place to store furniture that you will need again in the future.
A New Job
Perhaps you've been offered a great job opportunity that requires you to leave the country for extended periods. You don't want to pay rent, but you also don't want to pay exorbitant shipping to have all of your stuff moved. Self-storage offers an affordable option to keep your items safe while you live abroad.
Make 2020 a great year with the help of self-storage. Please call U-Lock-It Self Storage Belleville for rates and availability. Happy New Year, friends!
U-Lock-It Self Storage: Motorcycle Storage Tips
Here at U-Lock-It Self Storage Belleville, our convenient 10 X 10 units are perfect for motorcycle storage. Our secure self-storage units offer more than enough space for your motorcycle with room for other items too. Further, our 24-gate access means you'll be able to check on your bike whenever you want. With our fickle Michigan weather, who knows, maybe you'll even take it for a ride this winter.
You won't find a more affordable and convenient option for your motorcycle storage in the Ypsilanti and Belleville area. Please call U-Lock-It Self Storage today to learn about our 10 X 10 unit availability. In the meantime, here are a couple of motorcycle storage tips.
1. Don't Forget Fuel Stabilizer
After filling your tank with fuel, add the optimal amount of fuel stabilizer. Doing this will protect your carburetor's parts from gas that has deteriorated. Don't forget to let your bike run for a couple of minutes after adding the fuel stabilizer.
2. Time for an Oil Change
Engine oil changes over time, and not for the better. Make sure you change out your oil before storage to avoid any erosion or damage. Also, don't forget to change the filter plug while you're at it.
3. Avoid Sun Damage With our 10 x 10 units
Sun in the winter? Yes, we do have an occasional sunny day, which can spell bad news for motorcycles stored near a window. Our 10 x 10 storage units will protect your bike from sunlight that can damage leather and fade paint. We also suggest using a fitted cover for your bike.
4. Clean and Wax
Protect your motorcycle from any moisture damage by giving it a good clean and wax before putting it in storage. Just make sure your bike is dry before applying the wax.
We hope these tips are helpful, and we look forward to keeping your motorcycle safe and secure during winter storage.
As we enjoy the final weeks of fall, it's time to start preparing for winter. From winter tires to purchasing salt for your sidewalk, winter can be a lot of work. Winter can also be cluttered. As we start to spend more time inside, it's essential to stay organized. One way to accomplish this is to consider self-storage in our Ypsilanti storage facility. While self-storage is a great option year-round to declutter, it's particularly useful in the winter. Here are typical items people tend to store in the colder months:
Lawn Furniture - While it's sad to see your lawn chairs and tables go, you'll ensure they aren't damaged by cold and wet weather.
Summer Clothing - Yes, there are the occasional Michiganders who will be caught with shorts on in forty-degree weather, but for the rest of us, it's time to put away your summer clothes. We recommend storing them in plastic bins, which will protect quality. Doing this will open up much-needed drawer space for sweaters.
Lawn care equipment - It's time to swap those lawnmowers for snowblowers. Keep your spring/summer lawn care equipment safe and out of the way with self-storage.
Decorations - Our self-storage units are great for keeping your summer and fall holiday decorations safe.
Small vehicles - From motorcycles to ATVs, our storage facility is a secure and convenient place to store vehicles that don't see much use in the winter.
We know that in Michigan, the weather fluctuates, which is why our 24-hour gate access allows you to access your items when needed.
We look forward to assisting you with your winter storage needs. Please call U-Lock-It today.
October is in full foliage here in Southeast Michigan, and we wanted to share some lovely photos from our facilities. We are blessed to live in the Belleville/Ypsilanti area, where fall is a special and colorful time of year. October is also the perfect time of year to consider storing your summer and fall items to prepare for our long and arduous winter. From lawn furniture to lawnmowers, make room in your garage and closets with the help of our affordable and secure storage options.
Please call us today or stop in at our office on Rawsonville Road. We look forward to meeting you! Have a great fall weekend, folks.
Here at U-Lock-It Self Storage Belleville, your safety and security are our priority. To help make sure your self-storage experience is a good one, we have certain restrictions and suggestions on what you can and cannot put in your units. Below are a couple of items you shouldn't put in self-storage.
Food or Scented Items
Storing food in your storage unit can cause trouble for more than just yourself. Food draws the attention of critters such as mice, which can affect the whole facility. Drawing these unwanted creatures can cause damage to not only your food, but other stored items (as well as the items of other tenants). Scented items that aren’t edible can still attract critters, so we advise against storing such items in your unit. Please do us ALL a favor and don’t store food in your unit.
Before storing a questionable item, please ask yourself “could this cause harm to anyone?” If yes, then please don’t store it in your unit. Hazardous material covers a wide range of items from propane tanks to fireworks to pesticides and paint. If it can catch fire, cause fumes, explode, etc., then you shouldn’t put it in storage. This is for the safety of everyone involved, which is why we take it so seriously.
Animals and Plants
Please do not store anything that’s alive in your unit. Regarding pets, it’s against the law and cruel to put them in storage and should never be considered. As for plants, they most likely won’t live long without access to sunlight and water, so you’d be smart to not keep them in your unit.
Valuable and Sentimental Items
While we offer 24-hour surveillance and random security checks at our Belleville self-storage facility, we advise against storing something you can’t afford to lose. This includes jewelry, coins, art, or sentimental items such as photo albums. Here at U-Lock-It, we do offer insurance with your unit, but some things aren’t replaceable and not worth the risk.
Keep in mind that these are but a few suggestions, and we’d be happy to talk with you about items about which you are uncertain. We want to make sure your experience at U-Lock-It Self Storage Belleville is a happy one, and that starts with storing the right items.
Please call us today if you have any questions!
